I talked about the growing use of dst in pedagogy, oral history, community writing efforts across the nation. Joe Lambert’s (Director of Center for DST) efforts for over a decade to encourage dst. Tons of content is being created but there is no place to archive that is open access (like the Knowledge Bank here at OSU).

[In a previous conversation with Louie Ulman, he suggested contacting the Library of Congress and talking with them about the StoryCorp archive. Still plan to.]

The hope would be to create mechanisms with reasonably simple submission/archival [with a preservation plan]/and streaming-access. Johnathan Rush (Geography PhD student) is working on a mapping/spacialized interface for the Hilltop project, for instance that would pull media and metadata from the current KB archive and OSU streaming server).

I used my Hilltop Stories from that Columbus neighborhood as an example. Some samples are on the Knowledge Bank (kb.osu.edu), search for “Hilltop Stories.”

The system, once set up, could be duplicated for other archival purposes. An example of in-class videos for new and training teachers was described. But also for folklore and other narrative oriented disciplines.

Questions to concern yourself with:
What constitutes a dst will need to be hashed out with the principle people and submitters eventually. Who will review the content submitted?

Certain to grow, what media might the NdstA contain? Any one project might contain images, textual material, video, audio, other artifacts?

What are the essential metadata components that might you require/request?

How can the materials be (1) easily found (2) assigned CR (3) made available for re-use & mashup? The NdstA might be the preservation area but the real use of the stories is in their accessibility through local web presence (online newspapers and school web sites), sophisticated mapping interfaces, online gaming systems, neighborhood orgs., etc.

The Knowledge Bank (KB) representatives suggested that

The KB is interested in talking about the project. They have a long list of requests to consider in addition.
It’s more likely that one place hosting the whole thing that a consortia of archival sites might collaborate on something this ‘potentially’ big.
Perhaps this should start with a series of neighborhood and Ohio archive portals and grow outward after a proof of concept is built.
There is the challenge of pulling artifacts and metadata from multiple sites and multiple archival systems (not just dSpace) into our imagined mapping/spatialization site.
In terms of intellectual property, the KB asks for non-exclusive rights to publish materials. They will embargo materials for up to 5 years (i.e. journals publishing current articles)
Also talked about making stuff available to Google and Google scholar spiders

I walked away promising that I (Dickie Selfe) would put together an program-level IRB so that the archive could be trusted and used for scholarship. After that I’ll pull the useful information from that and propose a project to the KB and set up some meetings.

One measure of how wrapped up I became in the sessions from the opening scheduling talk was that I’d planned to film our proceedings with a flip camera. It didn’t occur to me that I’d forgotten until late day! Among some of the bests tips I discovered during the day: OSU Archivists put burlesque dancer cards up on Flickr (true story); the University of Illinois has students use materials from their knowledge repository to develop campus-based “Ideals” projects; Sondra Enimil, a new hire with the Library staff, specializes in copyright issues; and from Cynthia Callahan’s (faculty on the Mansfield campus; who graciously shared a session with me) work with VoiceThread and Camtasia to Dickie Selfe’s interactions on the Hilltop (Columbus) and in working toward a National Archive for Digital Storytelling–there are a great many interesting projects underway on Ohio State’s campus across the Humanities. THANK YOU to everyone who helped make the day a success. . .

Like most Web 2.0, there is the prosumer aspect of being able to curate your own galleries and share them with others. If anyone were interested, I would be willing to lead a GAP brief workshop (maybe in relation to other Google products?) seeing as the project is only 13+ months old and seeks to do what other archives like the Blake or Rossetti archive have attempted, but with Google resources on hand.

It seems like a very reasonable way to create scholarship on a digital collection like WWO, and I like how tightly coupled the exhibits will be with the objects themselves. (Unlike in traditional scholarly publishing, where you can interact with a book or image until the cows come home without knowing that there are books and articles written about it.)

Also, you managed to anticipate a session idea included in a post on collaboration that will probably go up tomorrow. Points for being first and for, apparently, reading the organizers’ minds! 🙂 One note about timing: normally, sessions aren’t scheduled for a time slot until the morning of. However, if folks want this session to happen, and if you want to make the project about THATCamp, we can be sure to put it in the second afternoon slot, which will be the last one before the plenary.

Editing a mid-nineteenth-century American manuscript, we often encountered spellings that were attested in the OED for earlier centuries. We encoded those spellings as archaic orthography along with conventional nineteenth-century spellings, then employed an XSL stylesheet to create searches of Google’s Ngram Viewer that would allow us to visualize the relative frequency of the conventional and unconventional spellings. Here’s an example:

ruff (rough): First appears in entry for 1852-02-09 — “This morning when I arose I found the weather quite good and quite smooth so I sat down and went to work on some fancy work but did not remain so long before the wind came ahead and made it very ruff yesterday I was seasick and unable to write.”

View unconventional spelling in Google Books Ngram Viewer
-> Compare unconventional and conventional spellings in Ngram Viewer
